You need to lose weight and you need to lose it right now. Calm down Veruca, you have options — but you might not like them. Furiously shedding fat can cause serious health issues, especially when you use the methods outlined in this article. Dropping pounds quickly can leave you dehydrated, malnourished, fatigued, and shriveled like a prune. So you’ve been warned. If you choose to read on and if you choose to go through with any of the following extreme weight loss techniques, it’s at your own risk.

We'd prefer it if you changed your eating habits and got on a workout program in order to lose weight — that is the better option. We're presenting this article to you because ignorance is not bliss.
weight loss drugs

Diet pills are a miracle of modern medicine, a cure for the “ailment” in our age of excess. Pop some pills and watch the fat melt away — that’s not far from the truth. Diet pills can work pretty well, but this extreme weight loss technique always comes with side effects. Most of them hit your appetite at its source: your brain. They are essentially thinly veiled amphetamines — speed in prescription form. They’ll do a number on your appetite, but they can also be addictive and destructive. Nature, in its nearly infinite variations, has also created a few appetite suppressors. Unfortunately, they haven’t been as rigorously tested as our synthetic drugs, but there is some evidence that they work.

Phentermine

Phentermine is one of the old boys on the block. It received FDA approval in 1959 as an appetite suppressant. It’s a prescription amphetamine that acts on neurotransmitters in the brain, reducing appetite. Take phentermine, eat less and lose weight. This product is approved for obese patients whose weight is causing serious medical problems, and it must be combined with a proper diet and exercise program in order to be effective. However, there are some side effects. Phentermine causes increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure. It can also cause insomnia and heart palpitations. Oh, and if you take it for a long time, you could become addicted to it.

Interestingly, phentermine was a somewhat silent player in the Fen-Phen scandal in 2004. Fen-Phen is essentially phentermine combined with other appetite suppressants, fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine. After some Fen-Phen users experienced heart problems, both “fens” were voluntarily taken off the market. Phentermine, however, remains in production.

Orlistat

Wouldn’t it be nice if the fat we ate just didn’t stick? That’s the idea behind Orlistat, a prescription weight loss drug that blocks the absorption of fats into the digestive tract. Less fat means fewer calories and, hopefully, weight loss. The drug works by inhibiting a pancreatic, fat-dissolving enzyme. When taken three times daily before meals, it blocks about 30% of the fat you eat. That fat then passes harmlessly through the digestive tract. Orlistat isn’t very effective. In yearlong clinical trials, the drug reduced body mass by about 5%, but only for half of the participants. And when they stopped taking the drug, they gained some of the weight back.

More bad news: Orlistat will give you the runs. The drug has been known to cause diarrhea, gas and, on occasion, fecal incontinence.

Bontril/Phendimetrazine

Bontril is another amphetamine-related weight-loss drug, but it’s even more addictive than phentermine. About a third of the drug is metabolized into phenmetrazine, a stimulant diet drug that was taken off the market due to its addictive nature. As a result, Bontril is now a Schedule III controlled substance. That means that it’s only available with a prescription and its use is highly monitored. Like phentermine, it’s an effective weight-loss drug that attacks appetite. You’ll cut your caloric intake and your fat. The drug is addictive and can cause increased heart rate and blood pressure. Extended periods of use can also wreck your nervous system, causing tremors, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and depression.
Hoodia

Hoodia is a succulent from Africa. It has been used for generations to deal with indigestion and even infection. Some also claim that it suppresses your appetite. In 1977, the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) discovered that the active ingredient in hoodia, now called P57, has an appetite-suppressant effect. Hoodia extract is available today as a natural way to lose weight and curb your hunger. There’s much debate over whether hoodia actually works. Few scientific studies have proved its efficacy. One doctor in Pennsylvania tested hoodia on seven of his patients and found that they lost about 3% of their body weight while taking it. Researchers at Brown Medical School in Rhode Island injected P57 into the brains of rats — an impractical method of delivery, to say the least. The researchers also found that the liver breaks down P57, so it’s difficult to get enough of the compound from taking extracts. There’s also some evidence that hoodia extract can cause liver damage in the long run.
Liposuction

Don’t have time to try any of the preceding extreme weight loss techniques? Get it sucked out. Liposuction is the fastest way to lose weight. It’s also the most traumatic. The gory details: You’ll be shaved for surgery, then either numbed or put under, depending on how much blubber is being removed. A quick incision and brace yourself for the vacuum — called a cannula — which sucks the fat clean out. It’s torn from your body, capillary blood vessels and all, and thrown in the trash. Expect to wear compression garments for up to four weeks to keep the swelling down. If everything goes smoothly, you’ll be svelte in six weeks. But there could be numbness, bumpy or wavy skin, and scarring. Liposuction is not as quick or easy as you’d think. It does, however, work to lose the fat. Remember, liposuction is primarily used for body “sculpting." If you are really obese, liposuction alone might not be an option. Sucking out large amounts of fat can be all the more traumatic for your body. Also, liposuction results are not permanent. If you return to your bad eating habits and don't start an exercise program to maintain your new body, the fat that was removed will just return.
Gastric bypass

Make your stomach smaller, eat less food and lose weight. Sounds straightforward, but gastric bypass is an extreme weight loss technique reserved for those who are morbidly obese and require weight loss to survive or maintain a healthy lifestyle. The procedure? Doctors staple your stomach into a tiny pouch that usually holds about an ounce of food. That means drastic caloric decrease and weight loss. The surgery can be nasty. Stapled stomachs can leak and cause infection. Tiny stomachs simply can’t absorb as much as full-sized ones. This can lead to malnutrition. To counteract it, doctors can recommend high-powered supplements. Despite these risks, gastric bypass is extremely effective. Within a few years, patients typically lose 50% to 60% of their excess weight — celebrities such as Star Jones and Al Roker have shown us firsthand the results that can be achieved.
extreme dieting

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Extreme diets are the oldest extreme weight loss techniques in the book: Eat only raw vegetables; cut out all carbs; one meal a day; absolutely no fat or sugar. They all work the same way, drastically cutting calories and helping with weight loss. They’re tough to maintain, but they do work. Severe diets will shed weight. They can also lead to some serious problems. If you don’t get enough calories each day, you’ll be fatigued and listless. If you cut out certain core nutrients, you could become malnourished. That includes fat, which is vital to survival. Harsh diets aren’t sustainable in the long run. Stop the diet and the weight will come right back.
